Community Health Projects
Serving basic needs of the community
We provide multigenerational, practical education around simple healthcare, sanitation and disease prevention. Initiatives such as WASH aim to build skills, promote hygiene, and boost community health and resilience.
HiSTORY
Our Projects so far
RIC has been working to support the Chuukese community in the challenges they face around the topics of healthcare and sanitation. Rising opioid use, especially among school dropouts and non-attenders, worsens vulnerability to diseases and psychological issues. Severe transport costs across the Chuuk Lagoon to the main island limit access to essential services.
Planned WASH PROJECT
3-Month WASH Project
RIC proposes linking vocational and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) training across local hamlets as an apprenticeship made accessible to small groups of participants for three months, covering 8-10 hamlets within a two-year grant period. Initiatives such as WASH aim to build skills, promote hygiene, and boost community health and resilience through multigenerational, practical education.

2024 Health Project
Summer Community Health Program
Our team visited the homesteads on both sides of the Chuukiyenu village and the surrounding mountainside and then held health workshops at the Philadelphia Christian School.
The project was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Bosco Buliche, Director of the Chuuk State Department of Public Health Services in FSM. The official full report can be accessed under the following link: 2024 Healthcare Summer Project

2017 Health Project
Basic Healthcare and Dental Care Program
In 2017 two nurses trained students in a program in First Aid, basic health,
and nutrition. Also in mid-January, we received a dental team from Germany. Dr. Lippert from Germany came to Foson with his Yacht for two weeks of free treatment of students and training in dental health.

Beziehungen aufbauen – inspirieren – zusammenarbeiten
How we work to improve healthcare
Island communities often face severe poverty, health issues like malnutrition and diabetes, unstable families, and poor infrastructure. Like with education, simply bringing in teachers and nurses isn’t enough—we must betreffen auf lokale Herausforderungen, inspirieren lasting change and zusammenarbeiten to build a lasting support network.
Involving the Community
We involve the community and local chiefs and church leaders and their wives to lead in the effort of discussing and improving healthcare.
We encourage sharing of local knowledge, around hygiene, established remedies and wound dressing.
Exercise as Prevention
In our school and in health programmes we value physical education and exercise as disease prevention.
Participants in our 2024 outreach engaged physical exercises designed to improve joint health, posture, and balance, and enhance overall well-being.
Hygiene, Sanitation and First Aid
Wound dressing, hand-washing, and domestic hygiene practices, all help to reduce cases of medical emergencies, that are hard to treat properly on the islands.
Basic First Aid knowledge can help to prevent wound infections and speed recovery.
Public Health
Working together with the he Chuuk State public health outreach team, we help to spread education on the biggest health threats and how to prevent them.
Preventing diabetes, vaccination of children, and recognising dangerous diseases like leprosy and tuberculosis early, all help to improve the health of the island communities.
